Quebec City, February 20, 2020 –Jean Houde, chair of the board of Les Violons du Roy, and Patrice Savoie and Laurent Patenaude, the organization’s joint executive directors, are proud to announce that Les Violons du Roy music director Jonathan Cohen has had his contract renewed for three years, until June 2024.

Quebec City, February 4, 2020 – Riveting recorder virtuoso and conductor Maurice Steger joins Les Violons du Roy in a program of sparkling, jaw-dropping Baroque works. The concert, entitled Un banquet baroque avec Maurice Steger, will feature recorder concertos and other works by Handel, Purcell, Geminiani, and their contemporaries—a musical banquet filled to the brim with intoxicating rhythms and sweet harmonies. It all happens on Thursday, February 13, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Palais Montcalm - Maison de la musique in Quebec City and Friday, February 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Bourgie Hall in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

Quebec City, November 21, 2019 – Music director Jonathan Cohen and Les Violons du Roy welcome mezzo soprano Christine Rice for a varied program of richly dramatic works. Together they will perform a selection of the most beautiful opera arias ever written by Rameau, Handel, and Purcell as well as Britten’s Phaedra, a dramatic cantata inspired by Jean Racine’s play. The concert Amours tragiques will be performed on Thursday, November 28, at 8 p.m. at Quebec City’s Palais Montcalm – Maison de la musique and Saturday, November 30, at 8 p.m. at Bourgie Hall, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Conductor Mélanie Léonard makes her Violons du Roy debut

Quebec City, September 26, 2019 - Maestra Mélanie Léonard will conduct Les Violons du Roy for the very first time as the ensemble hits the road in Quebec with Mozart en Scandinavie. The orchestra will perform a series of Nordic works under her baton, including the Sibelius Canzonetta, Grieg’s Holberg Suite, and Nielsen’s Little Suite for String Orchestra. A piece by Nielsen’s great hero, Mozart (his Divertimento, K. 136), will round out the program presented on tour in Quebec.

Quebec City, September 13, 2019Les Violons du Roy is proud to announce its first-ever tour in Asia, which will take it to South Korea and China from October 29 to November 5, 2019. Under music director Jonathan Cohen and featuring internationally renowned pianist Marc-André Hamelin, the orchestra will showcase Quebec talent in Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, and Quebec City’s sister city Xi’an with performances of works from the Classical period, including Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 27.
